The Declaratory Act, which was passed by the British Parliament in 1766, stated that Parliament had the right to legislate for the colonies in all cases whatsoever. The purpose of the Act was to reassert Parliament's right of control over the colonies. The British thought that such an action was necessary, since, by 1766, they had repealed both the Sugar Act of 1764 and the Stamp Act of 1765, due to colonial opposition. Parliament was worried that, by repealing those two acts in the face of colonial disconent, they appeared weak. The Declaratory Act was meant to show strength to the colonies.
