The purpose of Robert Frost’s “The Pasture” is to comfort a child. Its purpose is to let the child know that bad times will pass and that there will be a chance for renewal; “I’m going out to clean the pasture spring;/I’ll only stop to rake the leaves away/(And wait to watch the water clear, I may)/I sha’n’t be gone too long.-You come too.” Here, we see an adult who is clearing a path for a younger person and watching the water turn clean. It is evident that the child figure is frightened to be left by the adult. To this the adult assuages the child’s fears by saying “You come too.” The speaker of the poem is a mother or parental figure. The speaker’s purpose is to show the child that there is nothing to fear and that if you are afraid, the fear will not last forever; “I’m going out to fetch the little calf/That’s standing by the mother/It’s so young,/It totters when she licks it with her tongue./I sha’n’t be gone too long.-You come too.” These lines confirm the idea that the speaker of the poem is a mother because the speaker tends to empathize with the calf’s relationship to his mother. There is also an element of protection between the mother cow and her calf when she licks him with her tongue. The mother chooses to bring this to the attention of the child in order to reiterate the love and protection she has for her own child. The tone of the poem is calm and gentle. This serves as a comforting device for the frightened child. The poem is set on a pasture. The setting helps us to see as a child would see. A pasture is open enough to be beautiful and comforting, but also so massive that it may be intimidating for a little child. It may serve as a metaphor for the child’s life as his mother is leading him.
