How are autosomes different from sex chromosomes

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hello @violetcateyes ! Sex chromosomes are the chromosomes which gets transferred via gametes to the progeny or next generation. While autosomes does not get transferred. So any change in sex chromosome will be inherited by the progeny while the same will not be true with autosomes. In humans there are 44 autosomes (22 pair) & 2 sex chromosomes (1 pair)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar No, autosomes get transferred as well. It just means that it is a chromosome that is not involved in sex determination. So, for humans and our 23 pairs (46 total) we have 22 autosome pairs or 44 total. Our sex chromosomes are X or Y.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@mrdoldum oh yes i am sorry ! u r ryt

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So its just that sex chromosomes decide our sex and autosomes decide our other somatic characters

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@mrdoldum

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@violetcateyes i am sorry about that, both autosomes and sex chromosomes get transferred. sex chromosomes decide our sex and autosomes decide our other somatic characters.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar Well, it is much more complicated, but essentially yes. Autosome is is a term for a chromosome that is not involved in sex determination. Sex determination is fascinating though. Some species the "XY" would be female, not male as it is in humans. In fact, in humans, all of us are destined to be female unless the Y chromosomes genes function correctly. This is why males have nipples and the appearance of a fused line down the underside of our genitals.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar In fact, there is a rare condition where an individual is XY (in humans) but cannot recognize the hormones that are responsible for masculinization. This results in a genotype of XY and in the most extreme cases, a phenotype of XX. It is called androgen insensitivity syndrome.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@mrdoldum i knw that. However thnx for sharing that :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar I hope some one else read this at some point and gets something out of this discussion. And, I didn't mean to sound like a know-it-all and be pedantic.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I never meant it @mrdoldum. Sorry if u felt that way buddy :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar No problem, just wanted to let you know that I didn't mean to sound that way, just in case I did. Hard to really know without the tone the sentence is said in and the like you know.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yessssssssss.....Now lets chuck it :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol, good idea.
