What is the quotient written in scientific notation?

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

\[\frac{ 6x10^{24} }{ 8x10^{8} }\]

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

how do i do this?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

\[ \frac{6}{8}=0.75\] \[ \frac{10^{24}}{10^8}=10^{16}\] So you have \(0.75\times 10^{16}\) But you need one digit between 1 and 9 in scientific notation, so shift the decimal over, as a result you decrease the exponent by 1 (because shifting the decimal is like multiplying by 10) Hence: \(7.5\times 10^{15}\)

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

what do you mean by shift the decimal?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

For example, if you have: \(0.05\) If you shift the decimal to the right once you get \(0.5\) And doing so again, you get: \(5\) Now, if you wanna write 0.05 using 5 as the number before the decimal (5 is essential 5.0), then you need to multiply by the appropriate factors of 10: \(0.05 = 5\times 10^{-2}\) since you moved the decimal twice.
