what is the role of mutations?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hello @DeepalLittle ! Welcome to Open Study

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Can u pls specify in which direction u want to know the role of mutation ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it asks to describe the genetic code, distinguish between a gene and an allele, describe a mutation and explain the role of mutations. I need help about the role of mutations

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ohkay..!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Mutations can be both benificial and harmful. Changes in DNA caused by mutation can cause errors in protein sequence, creating partially or completely non-functional proteins. Each cell, in order to function correctly, depends on thousands of proteins to function in the right places at the right times. When a mutation alters a protein that plays a critical role in the body, a medical condition can result. A condition caused by mutations in one or more genes is called a genetic disorder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can mutations cause variations? if yes, how

OpenStudy (abhisar):

If a mutation is present in a germ cell, it can give rise to offspring that carries the mutation in all of its cells. This is the case in hereditary diseases. In particular, if there is a mutation in a DNA repair gene within a germ cell, humans carrying such germ-line mutations may have an increased risk of cancer.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes mutations can also cause variation...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know why? Please

OpenStudy (abhisar):

sorry got a call

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh. Anyways thank you very much for your help. Highly appreciated it :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes so i was sayng that mutations are nothing but change of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism. These changes produce variations. If these variations help the organism to adapt better then are naturally selected and passed on to the future generations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you again :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Whitemonsterbunny17 do you have an easier or better answer please

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I think that @Abhisar gave you the best explanation that could be given. :D And also, @DeepalLittle I wish you a warm welcome to Open Study!!! *^o^* & Bunny wishes you the best of luck with your future studies!! :3 /) /) O( ^.^)o *:・゚✧.゚・*:・゚✧.゚・* C(")(")

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for the warm welcome :3 and same to you :)

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

You're very welcome!! @DeepalLittle *^.^*

OpenStudy (abhisar):

u there @DeepalLittle ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No..no..its certainly not the best explanation :) @Deepallittle and Empress @Whitemonsterbunny17 thnx for being so Generous :)
