Hint: To start out, let's write these two expressions together with a subtraction sign between them. 1/5−2z−(z+2/3) (Parentheses were added around the pink expression to help us remember we're subtracting both pink terms.) Technically, this is all we have to do to add the expressions, but we should simplify this new expression by combining like terms. Let's clean up the negative signs to make it easier to rearrange the terms using the commutative property. We can distribute the negative sign to both pink terms. 1/5−2z−z− 2/3 Then rewrite the subtraction terms as addition of a negative. 1/5+(−2z)+(−z)+(− 2/3) ("Subtract z" and "add negative z" are two different ways of saying the same thing.)
