Where 'x' is the given angle, in this case, F.

Nope, the hypotenuse isn't the opposite side. It's the hypotenuse.
tan(F) = opposite side/side next to it

No. .-. We don't use 17, that's the length of the hypotenuse, the longest side.
When I talk about opposite and adjcaent side, I'm talking about the shorter sides of the triangle.
