The graph shows the functions f(x), p(x), and g(x): Part A: What is the solution to the pair of equations represented by p(x) and f(x)? Part B: Write any two solutions for f(x). Part C: What is the solution to the equation p(x) = g(x)? Justify your answer.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

I get the first part of this, part A, but the rest doesn't make much sense. I can tell you that in A, the solution to p(x) and f(x) is where they intersect on the graph, which is at point (-3, -2). I am not understanding the parts B and C. Hope you can help me understand then maybe I can help YOU understand! Good luck!

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

@kx2bay can you help me understand this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmmm thinking...

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

Okay :)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

p=g at (4, 1)

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

@skullpatrol is that for C?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

yep

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

@skullpatrol any ideas for B

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You could give the two approximate values the graph crosses the axis's

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

Can you help with that?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

(-4.6, 0) & (0, -5.7)

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

I have this so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree with A and C but not really sure about B, what do they mean by "2 solutions for f(x)", if I knew that then I can say if B is ok

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

I really have no idea..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

makes 2 of us

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from what I know , a solution to a Quadratic equation is when f(x) = 0 then find x = ? but here f(x) is linear

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

hmm

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

I got it! For Part B: Write any two solutions for f(x). It is asking for any two values that will make it a true statement. Looking at the graph (-7,3) and (-3,-2) are solutions.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

solution (or root) of an open sentence: Any value of a variable that turns an open sentence into a true statement.

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

@skullpatrol ahh ok that makes sense now.

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

Can you help with another please?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

I can try :)

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

The coordinate plane below represents a city. Points A through F are schools in the city. Part A: Using the graph above, create a system of inequalities that only contain points B and C in the overlapping shaded regions. Explain how the lines will be graphed and shaded on the coordinate grid above. Part B: Explain how to verify that the points B and C are solutions to the system of inequalities created in Part A. Part C: Lisa can only attend a school in her designated zone. Lisa's zone is defined by y > 2x + 5. Explain how you can identify the schools that Lisa is allowed to attend.

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

I think you should repost this one :)

OpenStudy (meilendurcer):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agree, well done skull on answering the above B, I was thinking the same but didnt know how to put in words like u ;)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

:D
