What are the four components of a controlled experiment? A. opinions, independent variable, constant, control B. data that matches previous research, opinions, variables, control C. independent variable, dependent variable, control, constant D. data that supports hypothesis, independent variable, constant, control
• IV (Independent Variable) = part of the experiment that the scientist changes or manipulates. The IV is the ONLY part of the experiment that different from the control part. • DV (Dependent Variable) = part of the experiment that the scientist must count or measure during the experiment (includes a unit of measurement, like grams, miles per hour, number of times something happens, or seconds) (also called the responding variable, because the dependent variable changes, or responds [is dependent upon] to changes in the independent, or manipulated, variable • Constants = all parts of the experiment that the scientist holds constant or keeps the same in order to provide a fair test and get good, meaningful results. Constants ensure a fair comparison between the control trials and the IV trials. Only the control and IV are different from each other; every other part of the experiment is held constant. • Control= part of the experiment that is used for comparison with the IV in order to get meaningful results; using a control helps the scientist learns how/if the IV changes the DV. If there is no obvious control, the scientist picks one of the IVs to be the control.
