Summarize the details of McCulloch v. Marylnd and Gibbons v. Ogden from Jackson’s perspective? Please and Thank you .

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Hey! I remember very briefly doing some research on this court case. I think what I can do is search Jackson's opinions and beliefs of the case...but do you know which Jackson it is? cx

Andrew Jackson C:

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Okay, let's see. While I research A. Jackson's opinion, why don't you tell me what this court case was, of course, only if you know. So then we can combine the two. :3

Maryland wanted to put a tax on banks not owned by the state? The McCulloch took it to the supreme court to get it appealed..... I think :/ i really suck at history :p

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Okay, so my memory has been refreshed. :3 Jackson was against a Federal bank and was for the questioning of the Constitutionality of such a bank before the Supreme court. He wanted it proved once and for all that the bank should not exist. Andrew Jackson successfully nominated Roger B. Taney, as Supreme Court Justice who opposed the establishment of the second Bank of the United States. Look what Wikipedia has to say... "In the summer of 1818, the national bank managers realized the bank's massive over-extension, and instituted a policy of contraction and the calling in of loans. This recalling of loans simultaneously curtailed land sales and slowed the U.S. production boom due to the recovery of Europe. The result was the Panic of 1819 and the situation leading up to McCulloch v. Maryland 17 U.S. 316 (1819).[4] " "Jackson, the populist, did not like the National Bank because he thought it served mainly to make the northeastern business elite richer, was very corrupt and exercised too much control over members of Congress. Even if he was right - which he actually was - he had really no idea what he was setting into motion, because breaking up the functions of the national bank just increased land speculation and borrowing on paper, and when he required payment in gold or silver for government lands, the banks did not have enough to meet the demand and the banking system collapsed and caused an economic panic (the Panic of 1837) followed by a depression. "

So I think the court case was about if they would actually keep the National Bank or make the Second bank...something like that. cx

I feel you. History is only easy when you have a nice teacher. History is literally just reading and remembering. cx I really think the only necessary history is US History, World Geography, World Cultures, and Religion. :P But oh well. Good luck! :D
