Why did slavery start in the American colonies?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Labor on plantations was manpower intensive. The natives did not adapt well to the work when enslaved. Few whites volunteered for such labor as free men, and indentured servants were prone to run away if the demands on them were too severe. In addition, the subtropical climates bred diseases that played havoc with both native and white labor forces. African slaves solved many of these problems. They tolerated the climates better, had resistance to many of the "white" diseases that devastated the native populations, and were available in sufficient quantities to make them cost effective. Plus, they provided a self sustaining labor force for those owners who chose not to free their slaves after years of service. This form of slavery helped create a new form of racism, where white slave owners justified the keeping of black slaves by claiming blacks were innately inferior. This was above and beyond the age old habit of humans to view their own cultures as superior. Through most of history other races might be looked on as inferior, but not simply because of their color.
