How did the controversy over slavery become violent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Before the Civil war? (1860's?)

yes

Thats a broad question. But, there are many like, The Dred Scott Decision, States’ Rights, Abolitionist Movement, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Missouri Compromise. The most violent parts were the John Brown incident and The Raid On Harper’s Ferry.

The act of taking someone into slavery is violent to begin with. Keeping a person in slavery is violent or at least uses the threat of violence. But if you're thinking 1800s, your teacher is probably looking for Nat Turner's rebellion, John Brown and the raid on Harpers Ferry and Bleeding Kansas. Each of those has a lot to tell, but that will get you started.

thank you both :)
