Where all the lines are above it are where the symbols need to be put

Believe it or not but I think those are accents for the Spanish Alphabet, unfortunately it also sounds like an old Irish poem. What is the question for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its for English I am in the poetry section. What do you mean is the question for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like how is the question asked? or rather what is it asking you to identify the symbols for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am in the meter and diction section of poetry and the directions are: "Scan the highlighted line by clicking on either an accent mark ( ) or breve ( ) and putting it in its correct position. Symbols will be used more than once. Use a dictionary for help." but I have looked for in the online dictionaries and can't find anything right now I am trying to find it in a physical dictionary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here take a look through this it might better help you understand what the accent marks and breves are used for and where they belong in your poem. http://www.enotes.com/homework-help/how-do-mark-syllables-poem-147839

so it should look somewhat like this (') (u) (') (') (') (u) (') The king sits in Dumferling toune, But double check that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was partially correct but I also need help with some other too I am just not understanding the application of accent marks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so basically accent marks are vowels of a word in the poem that is stressed, so notice how they gave you the rest of that poem that had all the symbols already placed? I recommend going through those lines first and reading it how accent marks and breves lay it out, then you just need to follow up with the rhythm on the line they ask you to label with the symbols so for example if: (') (') (u) (u) (u) I walked over the town Is read like that then the vowel O here is stressed in the poem so if its stressed meaning it has a U over it then you would pronounce that O in particular where as The I and A in that poem would be left to be read like normal.

Okay well thanks for the help @AndyLut i will have to wait for my teacher to respond to the questions because I am just not seeing how this works this is a tough point for me idk why it seems like it would be easy but its not but thanks anyways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Of course sorry I couldn't make it any clearer, poetry is better taught with voice anyhow.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yeah well I do online so most things i do are not taught by a teacher they expect me to read the text and figure it out so its very confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually I may be a little more helpful so if you would take a look at the poem your originally posted notice what vowels they place the accent marks and breves over? you basically just need to apply your accent marks and breves to the same vowels on the line above it, so the had a U over ing on Drinking and a ( ' ) over I on Drinking so the top line King would get a ( U ) over ing and toune would get a ( U ) over ne
