Lots of alien invastion movies and tv shows are based on the fear of the Soviet Union attacking. The TV show "Twilight Zone" zone played on this theme quite a bit. The original Star Trek was able to portray a far distant future by including Chekov in the crew. (and Uhura, but that's a civil rights nod.) Bomb shelters were a popular addition to suburban houses in the 50s and early 60s. Schools practiced bomb drills. Not just fire drills. In the 60s the counter culture found easy anti-establishment icons with references to Communists. Jane Fonda's Vietnam support is and example. Also, the Beatles hit "Back in the USSR" is a play on the Beach Boy's "California Girls"
