Ration and Irrational Numbers for younger kids.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

What do you want to know about them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An easy definition. My teacher gives me theses weird definitions that I have a hard time understanding. I thought if I asked for one for younger kids, I might understand it more. :) Can you help?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

rational numbers are fractions of whole numbers (the denominator can't be zero)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

examples of rational numbers 1/2, 2/3, 117/50 proper and improper fractions are allowed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also can you give me an easy example?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

also, whole numbers themselves are rational numbers because something like the number 7 is equal to 7/1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

irrational numbers are numbers that can't be written as a fraction of two whole numbers

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

some irrational numbers are \(\Large \sqrt{2}\) and \(\Large \pi\) you can't write these numbers as a fraction of two whole numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So could 1/10 or 1/4 be a rational number?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

they are since they are fractions of whole numbers
