Sketch those 2 points. Now plot the point (4, -6). Now you have a right triangle. Find the hypotenuse, and that is the distance between the 2 given points.

Sorry for bad picture but your b = 5 and a = 12. So c^2 = a^2 + b^2 to find the hypothenuse

Yeah, that's the same idea, just using (-1,6) as the point to complete the right triangle. Either way works. :)

btw, you often run into 3,4,5 and 5,12,13 triangles. These are right triangles.
