Which statement about phospholipids is true? Heads of phospholipids are hydrophobic. Phospholipids allow any particle to freely pass through the phospholipid bilayer. Tails of phospholipids are hydrophobic. Phospholipids do not allow small particles to freely pass through the phospholipid bilayer.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

All of the statements are false, but "Tails of phospholipids are hydrophobic." Phospholipids have a polar head group (which is a phosphate \(PO_4^{3-}\)) attached to a glycerol molecule which forms ester linkages to fatty acids. The fatty acids themselves are the "tails" and they're hydrophobic (non-polar) hydrocarbon chains.
