Are all these Rational? {0.947, −0.99, 5/11} @Hero

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Have a look at this page http://www.eduplace.com/math/mathsteps/7/a/ it explains where terminating decimal numbers fit in (whether they are rational or irrational)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think they are because the question is... Which of the following sets contains only rational numbers? A. {-3/10, √25, π} <-----> Pi is irrational B. {05, 06392…} There's a line over 5 in the 05. <----> I think 06392 is irrational C. {0.947, −0.99, 5/11} There's a line over 7 in 0.947 D. {√11, 0.2, −4/9} <----> √11 is irrational

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

repeating decimals are mentioned in that link as well

OpenStudy (dan815):

jim thompson

OpenStudy (dan815):

sqrt of all prime numbers is irrational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I'm wrong?

OpenStudy (dan815):

no sqrt11 is irrational you are right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero @jim_thompson5910 I'm right? :)

hero (hero):

@dan815, can you think of a prime number which you can take the square root of and get a rational number?

hero (hero):

If so, post it here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hero am I right? I gotta go to bed soon. :)

OpenStudy (dan815):

i dont let me think of this proof

hero (hero):

Good luck with the proof. But before you think of one, read this: https://proofwiki.org/wiki/Square_Root_of_Prime_is_Irrational

OpenStudy (dan815):

well thats just brilliant

OpenStudy (dan815):

i guess its pretty silly for a sqrt of prime to be a fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So am I right? @dan815 @Hero

OpenStudy (dan815):

yes! look at that proof its nice

hero (hero):

@CrazyCountryGirl which answer choice did you pick?

hero (hero):

I think you have it correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I picked B. :)

hero (hero):

B? Explain....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Woops! Typo, I mean C. :) Sorry I type to fast. Here's my explanations. :) A. {-3/10, √25, π} <-----> Pi is irrational B. {05, 06392…} There's a line over 5 in the 05. <----> I think 06392 is irrational C. {0.947, −0.99, 5/11} There's a line over 7 in 0.947 D. {√11, 0.2, −4/9} <----> √11 is irrational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Er....did you read what I wrote. I said typo... My answer is C....

hero (hero):

Yes, I did, but you keep going back and forth confusing me.

hero (hero):

C is correct. You could use a personal tutor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks! Why would I need a personal tutor, I've though it was C all along. :)
