How is sickle cell anemia an example of a pleiotropy?
Hello @prettyhutts16 ! Do u know what pleiotropy is ?
no
Pleitropy is the condition when a single gene controls more than one characteristics
*pleiotropy
an example is phenylketoneurea
Now sickle cell anaemia controls two characteristics 1)shape of RBC 2Introduction of Malaria resistance
@shreehari499 can u explain how ?
ok thnk u now i know
Anytime @prettyhutts16 !
ok
In sickle cell anaemia one gene is muated..and the person gets the disease... Due to this disease red blood cells have a weird shape...and they block blood vessels... and since their blood cannot carry enough oxygen, the other parts of his/her body gets affected like heart, kidneys etc...so as @Abhisar told ONE gene here controls more than one characteristics...:)
about PKU i asked BTW
Phenylketonurea?
I agree what u told about Sickle cell, but introduction of malarial resistance is more important. Most of the people in africa are resistant to malaria cz of this disease ! SO it is considered a favourable mutation in there population and is naturally selected
Anyways...u were absolutly crrct about PKU also @shreehari499 Many phenotypic characters like mental retardation, eczema, and pigment defects in addition to that associated with disease are controlled by a single gene in PKU
