What does the process of diffusion do for the cell? A. moves energy in the cell B. moves proteins through the cell membrane C. moves oxygen through the cell membrane D. moves water in and out of the cell
What do you think it does?
Look at the keyword there, "Diffusion". What could that mean. This is in regards to the cytoplasm, or plasma membrane.
i think its moves oxygen through the cell membrane?
Well, it moves molecules of Oxygen across the membrane, but not oxygen. Now keyword would be plasma membrane, what does the plasma membrane do?
proteins
Well by looking at the answers given, it moves pellet around.
Well, plasma membrane does have proteins in them, but doesn't move them. The plasma membrane only lets VERY SMALL items/molecules through the membrane.
ohhh im energy?/
Diffusion - area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. right? Now what does this refer to?
I could see where you get that, but the energy is made inside the cell, so it will never transport energy, however energy is created within the plasma membrane when it lets bigger objects through.
Leaves you only one option left, bud.
WATER lol.
Then how can u differentiate it with osmosis? @alphadxg ?
when ever we talk about diffusion it means area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, and also means we will be using passive transport, which is using zero energy, the cell is mostly made of 70-95% of water and its surroundings. So it is continuously moving water in and out by diffusion.
OMG Thanks for the help! lol sorry im just pretty tired and im just trying to finish up a few things before school ends so thank you !
@shreehari499 The question is not properly worded, depends on the question, but I see what you are talking about because I pretty much just explained osmosis.
i think the answer will be oxygen
YEAH.,mee too because the qn is not specific at all..and yeah movement of oxygen is also diffusion..bcz diffusion mainly occurs in gaseous state or within gas molecules.........:)
Oxygen would diffuse also, but water is still most appropriate, I think.
Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a partially permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides oxygen mainly acts as a solvent in cell
if the qn was based on Osmosis..I would surely have gone to option D..but since the qn is only Diffusion..both become relevent...:)
*sorry imeant water mainly acts as a solvent in cell
Diffusion involves movement of any CHEMICALS from one place to another and osmosis refers to movement of water across a membrane....:)
it says thats the correct answer was oxygen.
chck the second point http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/D/Diffusion.html
and again I say..If the qn was Osmosis..I'd surely have gone for option D...:) and yeah taken from @Abhisar 's link: Molecules and ions move spontaneously down their concentration gradient (i.e., from a region of higher to a region of lower concentration) by diffusion.
Water is also a molecule... Question is stupid my notes say water, so I'm gonna stick with it.
:D
:)
Both answers should be correct, my professor has water written here, and im putting my faith in his Phd
well if u'll try to learn in depth about osmosis, u'll come to know that Osmosis is a special term used for the diffusion of water through cell membranes.
This isn't my first year of biology @Abhisar ......
So ina way u r corrct but not most appropriate
Difusion is a more general topic and Osmosis is only a part of it...So i conclude that both the answers are correct....:)
haha okay idk thats just what my test said when i revised it said that was the answer but thank you all for the help
I never said that @alphadxg !! m sorry if u felt that way :(
Yup, were over.
We're*
In conditions like this we are taught to select the most appropriate answer...we often face such questions in which more than one is correct but only one have to be chosen
Yeah...thanx everyone !
:D
