The VERY FIRST error is in the thinking. There was a bad idea going in. This evolved into a more tangible error, later. Where do you suppose it is? How would you solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh my gosh i'm so sorry. i left cuz my mom was calling me i'm just now getting back @iambatman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyway i think line 2 is wrong

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

line 2 is not wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's not?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

we want to get the x term on one side and everything else on the other side. So 3 was subtracted from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

now from there, combine like terms and what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

x/4 + 3 = -12 -- subtract 3 from both sides -3 -3 ===========add does it help if it is written like this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thanks

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

the 3's cancel each other out on the left side...so what do you get when you combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-15?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yep...you get x/4 = -15.....now is that what line 3 says ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-9

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

right...that is the first mistake....line 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! :)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

sure thing :)
