what is John Martin s theory about iron dumping.
John Martin was an oceanopgrapher who died in 1993. His hypothesis is that the growth of phytoplankton in much of the world's oceans is limited by the amount of iron dissolved in sea water. He carried out lab experiments that showed adding a small amount of iron greatly accelerated the growth of the plankton. Every atom of iron resulted in the conversion of 10,000 molecules of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates. He projected that adding iron on a larger scale to the oceans could fertilize plant life and absorb so much carbon dioxide that global warming would be reversed. He said “Give me a half tanker of iron, and I will give you an ice age.” No less than nine larger scale experiments have been done adding a tonne or so of iron to actual oceans. Every one has resulted in rapid phytoplankton growth - although the productivity ratio is probably more like 1000 molecules of carbon dioxide for every atom of iron. However most mainstream climate scientists reject the idea for various reasons. Personally, I think it is the answer.

Thanks :)
No Problem. Can you fan? Thanks!
how can I explain this in my own words :s @BioEpic
John Martin believed that the amount of phytoplankton in the world's oceans is directly correlated to the amount of iron in the oceans. Therefore, reducing the amount of iron dumping would significantly reduce the amount of phytoplankton in the oceans.
