BREAKING NEWS! Since all of our power was down Last week, on May 18, 1980 in Washington State, Mt. St. Helens erupted, it’s ash is covering Washington, Oregon, and Idaho and many other states. Sixty two people were dead, beautiful forests and lakes were destroyed resulting in $3 billion worth of damage. Some people say this eruption was the greatest of all time. Mt. St. Helens was caused by divergent plates. The roar from this blast was heard from Canada. The ash from this eruption has already reached Boston. Hot ash causes forest fires, and snow melt from the top of the mountain causes floods. Over the last 500 years, Mount St. Helens has had at least 4 major explosive eruptions and many minor eruptions. Mt. St. Helens was a discovered to be a stratovolcano and it destroyed over 500 homes. The sun disappeared because of the big cloud of ash. A good effect that volcanoes have on the environment is to provide nutrients to the surrounding soil. Volcanic ash often contains minerals that are beneficial to plants, and if it is very fine ash it is able to break down quickly and get mixed into the soil. So this is a lucky week for farmers, their probably got their work cut out for them. The earliest eruption of Mount St. Helens was 10,000 BC. I hope everyone stays safe. Back to you Dave.
Why would you lead with "Since all of our power was down Last week "? In news, lead with the strongest point first. Then work towards progressively less and less important things. This is very typical of news. The smaller the details, the later you put it.
You are also running from topic to topic. Need a little more flow. For example: "The sun disappeared because of the big cloud of ash. A good effect that volcanoes have on the environment is to provide nutrients to the surrounding soil." You go from bad to good effects with nothing to prepare people for the transition. "What people may not be aware of is the good..." or "Volcanoes are not all bad news..." and so on are transitions that could help.
