Show how changing the position of the parentheses affects the solution for the expression: forty divided by 5 plus 5 times the quantity of 2 to the second power minus 1. Show all of your work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40/5+5*2^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\large\color{blue}{ \bf~40\div 5+5 \times(2^2-1)}\) You know that if you change the parenthesis you will get a different result....

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

You can show that by first calculating the correct expression, and then changing the parenthesis and see that you will get a different result.

kk thx

Squaring a number is the same as multiplying the number by itself (2⋅2). In this case, 2 squared is 4. 405+5⋅(4−1) Subtract 1 from 4 to get 3. 405+5⋅(3) Multiply 5 by each term inside the parentheses. 405+15 Reduce the expression 405 by removing a factor of 5 from the numerator and denominator. 8+15 Add 15 to 8 to get 23. 23

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

(I haven't really done anything like that, but this is apparently what you have to do.) YW

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So i have the best response right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So since your new what you do if you click best response next to it and it shows people when they come what the best response was

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
