Which part of the story is the rising action?
"The Pardoner's Tale" from The Canterbury Tales begins with a description of the pastimes of a group of profane and riotous youths. One day, three youths from the group see the corpse of a former companion being carried past their tavern. On inquiry, they learn that Death, with which they are presumably unacquainted, is responsible for the fate of their companion. The three swear to find Death and kill him, and immediately set out to perform their mission. On their way, they meet an old man of whom they rudely inquire where they can find Death. The old man directs them to a tree, under which, to their surprise, they find a treasure. The two older companions then contrive to send the youngest away to get them food and drink while they guard the treasure. They plan to kill the younger companion when he returns and to divide the treasure between themselves. The younger companion, for his part, plans to poison the other two. He mixes a strong poison in the bottles of wine he buys for the other two. When he returns, the other two kill him as planned. They then drink the poisoned wine and die shortly thereafter under the tree. Which part of the story is the rising action? Three youths decide to go looking for Death. The youths' companions slay them for money. The youths are killed by strangers. An old man tells the youths where to find Death.
