How would I solve this The figure below shows two similar pictures that Jeremy wants to frame:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Jeremy has 5 strips of unfinished molding that he wants to use to frame the two pictures. Each strip is 36 inches long. Assuming there is no wastage or overlap of molding, what is the minimum length of molding, in inches, Jeremy still requires to frame both the pictures? Show your work and explain your reasoning in complete sentences.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

determine the perimeter of each shape, then subtract the 5(36) to find whats needed

OpenStudy (amistre64):

as for the perimeter of similar objects: 2a + 2b is similar to: 2ka + 2kb k(2a+2b) so the perimeter of one is the scalar of the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay So the perimeter of the smaller rectangle is 58?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

13 13 16 16 40 12 6 58 is good for that one

OpenStudy (amistre64):

now 58 + 58k is the total we need, or simply 58(1+k) if that makes it simpler is yet to be seen the scalar, k, will simply be the value such that 13k = 58.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the perimeter of the bigger one is 261?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

dunno, k = 58.5/13 giving us 58(58.5/13) ... 261 yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait You're going to fast I don't understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did K come from?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i was just verifying your results ... similar images differ by some multiplier: therefore the bigger rectangle is just some k scale version of the smaller one. |dw:1401827467555:dw| 58+261 total needed, and we have 5(36)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So we have 180 inches and we need 319?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct so we need to make up that difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay and how do we do that

OpenStudy (amistre64):

180 + x = 319 ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or logically, if we need 319, but already have 180, then we simply dont need to get 180 of it: 319 - 180 will determine how much we still need to get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

239

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought thats what I did sorry it's 139

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64 don't leave me!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you did fine :) I have real life matters of my own that need attended to from time to time, but you did well.
