OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Madison had helped develop Virginia's Constitution 11 years earlier, and it was his "Virginia Plan" that served as the basis for debate in the development of the U.S. Constitution. Madison argued strongly for a strong central government that would unify the country. The Convention delegates met secretly through the summer and finally signed the proposed U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787

OpenStudy (timaashorty):

Would you mind helping me JMM ?

John Locke was an optimist when it came to his view of the government. It is thought his opinion may have been influenced by the events just before. There was a peaceful transfer of power in the Glorious Revolution when Parliament forced King James II to abdicate the throne. William and Mary became the new English monarchs. John Locke believed in something called a social contract. Some people had ideas of a social contract before but John’s idea was influenced by his optimistic view. The social contract was a cooperative choice by people to entrust power to their government. If government does not carry out the will of the people, said Locke, the people possess the power to change their government. His idea of a social contract reflected the "consent of the governed." This was a major shift in thinking from previous notions. The previous notions were that people had a natural state of being cruel, selfish, and greedy. People thought the only way to keep order in society was by giving the government absolute power. The concepts of consent of the governed and sovereignty of the people are actually still in our lives today. John Locke’s two ideas found their way into the Declaration of Independence.
