Definitely the second option -- Property destruction in the South. Today, Sherman's March would be compared to the concept of scorched earth tactics where the objective was to leave nothing for the enemy. In this case, Sherman decided to destroy most everything in his path that could be used for war (industry, farms, railways, etc..) in order to break the Confederacy's psychological and physical ability to wage war.
