OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

Can someone help me I need to know something about polynomials and if it is a monomial or binomial or trinomial

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

I belive it is binomial idk though

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

What type of polynomial is x(x - 4)(x - 5)

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

@jojo9999 @DollyAcquah

OpenStudy (muzzack):

A monomial is the product of non-negative integer powers of variables. Consequently, a monomial has NO variable in its denominator. It has one term. (mono implies one) 13, 3x, -57, x², 4y², -2xy, or 520x²y² (notice: no negative exponents, no fractional exponents)

OpenStudy (muzzack):

A binomial is the sum of two monomials. It has two unlike terms. (bi implies two) 3x + 1, x² - 4x, 2x + y, or y - y²

OpenStudy (muzzack):

A trinomial is the sum of three monomials. It has three unlike terms. (tri implies three) x² + 2x + 1, 3x² - 4x + 10, 2x + 3y + 2

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

I know what they are I just need help understanding what that one is

OpenStudy (muzzack):

i think that is binomial

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

@phi is he right? I think he is I just want to be sure

OpenStudy (phi):

x(x - 4)(x - 5) you can multiply that out and then count the terms first, can you multiply (x-4)(x-5) ?

OpenStudy (phi):

some people use FOIL some use the "distributive law"

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

Yes that would be \[x ^{2}-9+20\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

now what happens when we distrbute the remaining x thru it?

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

I have no idea

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

@amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you have no idea how to multiply that setup by x?

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

It would be -9x+20?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x(x - 4)(x - 5) x(x^2 -9x 20)

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

Is what you are shoing me going to help me get the answer to What type of polynomial is x(x - 4)(x - 5)

OpenStudy (muzzack):

then it would be \[x^2-9\times20\]

OpenStudy (muzzack):

yes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

of course, either that or im doing my taxes and this was the only post that had the room for it :/ x(x-4)(x-5) x(x^2 -9x +20) x(x^2) -x(9x) +x(20)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how do we define a polynomial as: mono, bi, or tri ?

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

Mono means 1 term bi means 2 and tri means 3

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

@amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1,2,or 3 what?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

oh, i see it, you stated in terms :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so, how many terms does the finished results have? x(x^2) -x(9x) +x(20)

OpenStudy (barrelracer011):

It has 3 so it would be a trinomial

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct
