OpenStudy (beccab003):

What is the reciprocal of 0? 1/0 there is none infinity 0/1 I know that it is either the first or the last...but I'm not sure which...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is none

OpenStudy (beccab003):

What?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Every number has a reciprocal except 0 (1/0 is undefined)

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Are you sure?

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Yes. But in limits such an expression would be infinite (Calculus).

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Okay. But for algebra it would be undefined? Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I explained myself you can either take it or leave it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Isaiah.Feynman this is algebra not calculus

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

@Shay17 Relax. You are right for basic algebra.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then leave the question alone and don't respond

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

And yes for this level of mathematics such an expression is undefined.@BeccaB003

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Thanks! Can you help me with one that is similar?

OpenStudy (beccab003):

The reciprocal of 5 is: -1/5 There is none 1/5 -5

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Isn't the reciprocal something times something equals that number? so like 3*3 equals 9? The reciprocal of 9 is 3. Is that what it means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/5

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Nope. The reciprocal is "1 over"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5= 5/1 so reciprocal is 1/5

OpenStudy (beccab003):

oh okay. Sorry I couldn't remember what a reciprocal was. So, for the other question wouldn't it be 1/0? I know that that means it is undefined but still that is how it looks..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

except for zero i said

OpenStudy (beccab003):

but wouldn't that be how it looks like to be undefined?

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Plus the answer says: there is none. when it is just undefined..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just know that zero has no reciprocal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is none is the same as undefined :/

OpenStudy (beccab003):

okay...are you sure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

positive

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

@Hero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what grade are you in ? @BeccaB003

OpenStudy (beccab003):

9th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh

OpenStudy (beccab003):

I just wanted to be doubly sure...sorry

OpenStudy (beccab003):

I didn't tage hero

OpenStudy (beccab003):

someone else tagged hero...

OpenStudy (beccab003):

What do you think hero?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Regarding "Isn't the reciprocal something times something equals that number? so like 3*3 equals 9? The reciprocal of 9 is 3. Is that what it means?" NO. Given quantity ' a ', the reciprocal of ' a ' is 1/a.
