What scale factor was used to dilate rectangle WXYZ to form rectangle W′X′Y′Z′? A. −5 B. −1/2 C. 1/2 <--- D. 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at your solutions and try each one, multiply the original by ones given in your solution and if it gives you the following, that's your answer. Once again, dilation (x*n,y*n), where n is the constant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iambatman So I'm wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Idk, I didn't check, believe in yourself!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you check? I really wanna know if I'm right. :) @iambatman @mathstudent55 @mathslover

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Take one vertex, lets take X : look at the given graph - can you tell the coordinates of X ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does the Y axis or the X axis go first? @ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

always "x" is the first : (x, y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9,-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x,y) not (y,x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Woops I mixed the two up! My eye sight is bad, and it's 3 am herwe. :) -2,9?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iambatman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, that's right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait so C is right? @iambatman

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

nope, answer is B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh. :) Thank you!!! :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

X = (-2, 9) X' = (1, -4.5)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

scale factor = 1/(-2) = -1/2

OpenStudy (rane):

when the graph dilates parallel to the y- axis the S.F ( scale factor) is "a" when the graph dilates parallel to the x-axis the the S.F is \[\frac{ 1 }{ a}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

scale factor is -1/2 in each x-axis as well as y-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the signs .. where its positive in wxyz , in dilated its negative in all 8 coordinates.. and also all coordinates are sclaed with 1/2 , u can match themm .. so scale factor is -1/2 lol

OpenStudy (rane):

that was a general formula Mr, @khurramshahzad. I in directly answered her/his question. Infact i didnt look at their coordinates.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh its no general formula.. the question is .. u said for vertical sclae factor is a.. n for horizontal is 1/a,..... what ever a is .. my point is for vertical and horizontal dilation in this case scale factor is same

OpenStudy (rane):

""""in this case"""" @khurramshahzad im not answering their question. i just wrote the formula WITHOUT looking at the COORDINATES. anyhow dw abt it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha relax Ms.. y so exciting :P .. ok may b u r right .. i dnt hv idea wats ur point actually ..
