z=4x+y^2 has some sort of 3d graph. Is the point (5,4,36) on the curve? Do I just plug in and get 36=36 so the answer would be yes?

"plug in" doesn't mean anything. Yes, you substitute the given values and see if they meet the requirements of your relation. Get something sensible, like 36 = 36, and it's in the curve. Get something silly, like 30 = 14, and it's not on the curve.
