how are ocean waves and sound waves similiar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both sound waves and ocean waves are transverse and mechanical waves. A transverse wave is a wave on which its energy moves perpendicularly to the waves direction. This is the up and down motion we do in the wave. A mechanical wave is a wave that needs a medium to travel. A medium is all matter, so sound and ocean waves can't travel through space, but they can through our atmosphere. Though sound waves and ocean waves seem extremely different, their composition and form of relaying energy is very similar.

sound wave is not a transverse wave

Oh, sorry. You're right, sound waves are actually longitudinal waves. That's my mistake.
