How do you determine if a source is primary or secondary?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event. Secondary sources are documents written after an event has occurred, providing secondhand accounts of that event, person, or topic. Unlike primary sources, which provide first-hand accounts, secondary sources offer different perspectives, analysis, and conclusions of those accounts. Hope that helps you understand!

thank you so much :)

Broadly speaking it means if you refer to primary sources you referred to original documents in research; if secondary sopurces you refer to somepone else's published work referring to the primary source. Primary sources could be manuscripts, but could be results of surveys or other original research material. Secondary sources (as should all credible rresearch) will identify where their material came from, so you should be able to tell which is which.
