What is the type of verbal and the verbal phrase in the sentence "The boy playing the piano has spent much time in practice."
Hello and welcome to Open Study! A verb phrase is the portion of a sentence that contains both the verb and either a direct or indirect object (the verb’s dependents). So "playing the piano" would be the verbal phrase!
Thank you!! also what would be the type of verbal such as infinitive, participle, and gerund.
Gerund - a form that is derived from a verb but that functions as a noun, in English ending in -ing, e.g., asking in do you mind my asking you?. Participle - a word formed from a verb (e.g., going, gone, being, been ) and used as an adjective (e.g., working woman, burned toast ) or a noun (e.g., good breeding ). In English, participles are also used to make compound verb forms (e.g., is going, has been ). Infinitive - the basic form of a verb, without an inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense (e.g., see in we came to see, let him see ).
What do you think it is, using the definitions I listed?
Participle??
Yes, I believe it is Participle!
So it is not Gerund and it is Participle? Because of the -ing at the end of playING?
Yes, sorry for my mistake... It is Participle!:)
i agree with @cherry17ann
