The force of the atmosphere at sea level against the outside of a 10@m2 store window is about 1 million N. Why doesn’t this shatter the window? Why might the window shatter in a strong wind blowing past? @Abhisar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.8=?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

is that 100m2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me double check

OpenStudy (abhisar):

10@m2 = 100m2 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The force of the atmosphere at sea level against the outside of a 10-m2 store window is about 1 million N. Why doesn’t this shatter the window? Why might the window shatter in a strong wind blowing past?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

okay..now basically a pressure of 10-m2 is exerted by the air in all direction of the window. This cancels out and makes a net pressure of 0. Thus the window never breaks.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

getting it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

explain

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I'll gv u an example

OpenStudy (abhisar):

U know cola can ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now after drinking the cola when we throw it away, it doesn't gets crushed but maintains it's shape. Now if we remove all the air from inside it will get crushed due to the atmospheric pressure outside.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but when it is full an unopened it maintains it shape

OpenStudy (anonymous):

due to pressure inside the can

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Have a look on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUrKPFWs-A8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool

OpenStudy (abhisar):

This air pressure is very powerfull and is always acting on us too

OpenStudy (abhisar):

But we dont get crushed like the window pane because it's acting on us in all directions.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now in the video what happened actually ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

make sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he put the opening in the water and then it was crushed do to no air

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after he heated it up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

changed the pressure inside the can

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Yes that made some of the vapor inside condensate and reduced the air pressure inside it than outside which made the can collapse like hell !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (abhisar):

See the following video to experience the power of Air pressure if u want to ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsoE4F2Pb20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brb

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So everything clear ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lets try another

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ok
