How to become a Moderator: First rule: You must be 18+, due to legal issues. Second rule: You have to be, and act mature. Then you have to win the respect of this community through interaction, knowledge and the ability to interact and intervene in an appropriate manner. It is in big part based on participation, courtesy and respect. The most important thing is that you let the administrators and moderators know that you can see things going awry, and that you are willing to make some effort to solve/prevent it. And certainly NOT in a way like messaging them about how bad you want to be a moderator (this will only work contradictory), but they have to notice that you are up for the job. Then, when they decide they need more moderators, you might get asked. ◘ Being on the site for a fair amount of time. (usually more than 6 months) ◘ Be an good and active user on the site ◘ Having a squeaky clean abuse record. ◘ Have good rapport with fellow users. ◘ Having a good sense of justice. ◘ Being an expert in some field. Most of the mods are math geniuses. But any subject would suffice. ◘ Doing a great job in the ambassador program. In the ambassador training period, you'll learn how the rules work on OpenStudy and you'll learn how to make the right decisions. ◘ Hope you'll get lucky when they decide to add more moderators! ~thomaster

OpenStudy (blues):

Opinions are mixed on whether mods are required to be a certain age. When OpenStudy started there was no age requirement for mods. To my knowledge, three of OpenStudy's finest mods were under 18 when they were modded. Two of these three remain substantially under 18 and they both uphold the finest standards of competence and maturity in filling that role. Last year there was incident involving another mod who happened under 18. This mod behaved irresponsibly and lost the position and indeed was kicked off the site. After that incident, certain administrators felt that if an age requirement were imposed on mods that incidents like this unpleasant incident would have been avoided. I personally feel that imposing an age requirement is a subjective, emotional, knee jerk reaction to one individual's poor decisions (or perhaps an emotional knee jerk reaction to a poor personnel decision of having modded this individual in the first place) and that age (as opposed to maturity) should have little relevance on whether an individual is fit to be a moderator. Everyone should be able to contribute to the best of their abilities, without limits imposed by administrivia and other peoples' prejudices.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

There are technically no requirements to becoming a moderator, but generally Administrators want you to be mature, respectful and know the ropes. Though, these are not written in ink. Like @Blues mentioned, some moderators are under 18 - everyone is judged by a different criteria based upon their standards, circumstance and various contributions to OpenStudy. \(\huge ツ\)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

There is a current mod that was on the site for less than three months before becoming one. Why? Because they are a retired professor that was very activity promoting the proper use of the site without being a mod. Their age, experience, responsibility, and alignment with the sight goals all came into play. At almost the same time, one of the earlier users of OS who has been with the site as both a teen and an adult and has a huge history was made one. For a very long time they have been promoting a more proper use of the site. The main common factor in all the mods I have seen made, including myself, is actively promoting the proper use of the site. By actively I include doing tutoring rather than just answering questions, promoting peace in chat, taking a more neutral stance on hot button topics, etc. This means living the CoC and TaC while also promoting others to do the same. Also, being a mod is not what most people seem to think it is. The latest two have both already commented on that, as did I when I became one.

Do moderators get paid? I would be interested in being one in my free time even though I am still a teenager and almost graduating, but I can especially help other students in the Spanish, English Lit, Writing sections. Language (both English and Spanish) is something I am sure I can be helpful in.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Moderation is not about helping people in specific sections. It is about doing our best to remove abuses of the site. Anyone can help in any section that they want to. It is not a paid thing. It is like people that see trash in the street and pick it up and put it in a garbage can, or if it is a recyclable put it in the right place. It is about making a more friendly and useful community that is focused around education.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Ambassadors and Moderators do not get paid. Some Administrations get paid. Programmers are often provided with a form of currency. Donations are recycled to certain parts of the staff, such has paid projects and advertisements.
