What is the distance between P(0, 14) and Q(5, -2)?

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Square root of 281 13 Square root of 171 14

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\bf \textit{distance between 2 points}\\ \quad \\ \begin{array}{lllll} &x_1&y_1&x_2&y_2\\ P&({\color{red}{ 0}}\quad ,&{\color{blue}{ 14}})\quad Q&({\color{red}{ 5}}\quad ,&{\color{blue}{ -2}}) \end{array}\qquad d = \sqrt{({\color{red}{ x_2}}-{\color{red}{ x_1}})^2 + ({\color{blue}{ y_2}}-{\color{blue}{ y_1}})^2}\)

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Thanks! I got Square root of 281, correct?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Another way to do it is to plot the points. Then draw a right triangle (see attached) Then find the lengths of the blue and green lines. Those are the legs of the right triangle. You want the distance between the two points. This is the red line segment which is also the hypotenuse of the right triangle. You use the Pythagorean theorem is used to do this.

Thank you both
