Mercutio’s characteris manily a joker or 'class clown' throughout the whole novel. If it helps, there is a version of Romeo and Juliet with the old English and the modern English, it can help you understand it better. Also @von.co , he is making fun of Romeo for being passionate about Rosaline, before Romeo meets Juliet. Hope this helps :)
