Find the value of x. 4x degrees 2x degrees 3x degrees. x = ? this is all inside of a triangle by the way, is there a way I can show a picture?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You're dealing with a triangle. What basic fact pertains to the sum of the three interior angles of a triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If angle a = 50 and angle b = 60, what is the other angle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its 70

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Explain how you got there if you want me to correct any errors. :)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hint: as you probably already know, the sum of the four interior angles of a square is 360 degrees. @jcpd910: Aren't you assuming here that the triangle is a right triangle? If so, what is your justification for assuming that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if angle a is 50 and b is 60 you need 70 more to equal 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mathmale, I am just offering up an example to see if he can calculate it. And he can.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's easier to explain things when I know what he understands and what he doesn't. Know what I mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im about to post a pic one sec..

OpenStudy (mathmale):

True. I was asking you what the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is, and you have done so, but indirectly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's assuming that this is an acute triangle. It'd be easier if you could provide a picture yourself. Does it look like this or is there an angle that is obviously larger than 90?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Either way you can write the equation like this: 4x + 3x + 2x = 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know the next step in solving that equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x=180 then divide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so simple i was thinking way too hard I feel dumb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember to check your work by substituting 20 for x in the original equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4(20) + 3(20) + 2(20) = 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

80 + 60 + 40 = 180 180 = 180 True
