In one day, the Ace Supermarket sold twice as many apples as pears and twenty more oranges than pears. If 960 of these fruits were sold that day, how many were pears?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Since all the other fruit sales are based upon the sales of pears, we are going to call pears "x". If the store sold twice as many apples as pears, and it sold x number of pears, what is the identity for apples?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x

OpenStudy (imstuck):

very good. Now if the store sells 20 more oranges than pears, what is the identity for oranges?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

X+20

OpenStudy (imstuck):

right again! Now, the problem is telling you that the sales of all the fruits came out to a quantity of 960. So what does that tell you that you have to do with the x, 2x, and x + 20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add them...

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Yes! Add them and set them equal to 960, because pears plus apples plus oranges = 960.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

x + 2x + x + 20 = 960. Combine like terms.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

What do you get for your x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

235

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct.
