In your own words, explain why sound waves cannot travel in space.

OpenStudy (shamim):

sound wave needs medium to travell. space has no medium. its vaccum

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

if space has no medium, a fundamental question would be, where does the matter in universe lie? isn't it in the so-called "space?" |dw:1403483463380:dw|

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I have one question for you. Travel through what?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

medium = 'any matter'

OpenStudy (dan815):

rood

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I think its better to read up on how our ears work.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

that may shine a light on your question as well.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I don't think your ears would work in outer space as it would here on earth. Let us confirm it by experiment :)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

lol, im saying that once we realize that our ears are just picking up vibrations in the air, then its easy to see we cant hear without air, and that might help to see why there is no sound....maybe sort of lol

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

We don't have to hear sounds to detect it. Image is another way.
