Explain how energy is transfered in a food web.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm. This could mean a few different things. In a food web, 10% of energy is lost every time it goes up. So, say at the bottom you have 1000 energy. Next level you will lose 10% which leaves you with 100. Next level you will have 10. And on and on, until you reach the top.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand but can u help me write a few sentences on it please :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes of course. Although, the question is kind of vague. I'm fairly certain it is referring to energy loss though. So, as I said before there is an energy loss of 10% for each level in the food chain. You can state that and then give an example. For your example you can put that in the Producer level of the food chain there is 1000 for energy. The primary consumer eats the producer and gains that energy, but with a loss of 10%. So, the primary consumer will now have 100 for energy. The secondary consumer eats the primary consumer and the same thing happens, so it now has 10 energy.
