Describe the differences between the graph of y = -3(x + 7)2 - 10 and the standard position graph of y = x2.

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

\(a(x-h)^2+k\) \(a\) is a dilation factor that widens the graph if \(|a|>0\) and makes it more narrow is \(|a|<0\) If the sign of \(a\) is negative, the graph does a reflection of itself. the \(h\) parameter will shift your graph horizontally. If \(k>0\), it will shift to the right, if \(k<0\) it will shift to the left. the \(k\) parameter will shift the graph vertically. If \(k>0\) it will shift it upward, if \(k<0\) it will shift it downward.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that it?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

oh when I say it does a reflexion, it does a horizontal reflexion to be more precise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok anything else

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

pretty much, just use that information with the numbers given to you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks a lot

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

oh in the 2nd paragrpah, I talk about \(h\) but wrote k afterward in that same line. It should always be about h!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

h > 0: shift to the right h < 0 : shift to the left
