Steve is analyzing two linear functions, f(x) and g(x). Will they intersect? f(x) graph of the function f of x equals x plus 1. This is the table: g(x) x g(x) 1 1 2 3 3 5 Answer choices: (a)Yes, at a point with a positive x-coordinate (b)Yes, at a point with a negative x-coordinate (c)Yes, at a point where x is zero (d)No, they will not intersect

geerky42 (geerky42):

Try to plot these functions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@geerky42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you graph the line f(x) = x+1 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont know how

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of f(x) as y. Does this help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really. I'm just so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)=x+1 if x = 0 what will f(x) equal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(0)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x) =0 So if x=1 what will f(x) =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)=1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have attached a graph for you to use. Think of y as f(x). So we say x = 0 then f(x) = 1. Can you plot that point on the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it'd be (0,1) correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's try that again. If x=1 and f(x) = x+1 What will f(x) be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes(0,1) is correct. Now what will be the points when x=1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1,1) correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No that is incorrect. Look at the function. It says f(x) (which means the value of the function for(x) equals x+1. So if x=1. And our function is x+1..What will f(x) be>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x) would be 2? Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct so our coordinates for the value of x will be what on the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1,2) correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct..Now plot points for x=-2 and for x=4. What will the coordinates be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i still using x+1=f(x)? That just confused me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-2,2) is that correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are still using f(x) = x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if x= -2 what is F(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)=-1 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1403922342570:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I attached something they may make it easier to understand. But now that you have the coordinates you need to plot them on the graph and draw your line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they would be (-2,-1) (-1,0) (0,1) (1,2) and (2,3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Very good...did you graph the line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. on a sheet of paper.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1403922981494:dw| Something like this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1403922999770:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes lol disregard that ^^^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The second line iw easy as they give you x and g(x). All you need to do is plot them and see where they intersect with the line you just drew.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they intersect when i plot (2,3) with (2,3) correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Terrific...So which is the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Winner..winner chicken dinner..good job....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you SOOOOOO much!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your more than welcome
