15 + |-3| - 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@pillspotion Nothing will change until you learn how the absolute value works.

OpenStudy (igreen):

I forget how this works..

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

15 + | -3 | - 4 --- absolute values are positive 15 + 3 - 4 now you do the math

OpenStudy (igreen):

You got 2 equations, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The absolute value removes the negative sign if there is one, otherwise it does nothing.

OpenStudy (igreen):

15 - 3 - 4 and 15 + 3 - 4 ? You solve them both?

OpenStudy (igreen):

Oh..so that's all it does?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iGreen You only do that for something like: \[ |x-3|=5 \]

OpenStudy (igreen):

Oh..

OpenStudy (igreen):

I don't know how to solve that either..

OpenStudy (igreen):

Forgot about the absolute value things..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You solve \[ x-3=5\quad\text{and}\quad -(x-3)=5 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@igreen 14

OpenStudy (igreen):

That's correct, @pillspotion

OpenStudy (igreen):

Thanks @wio

OpenStudy (igreen):

So in that case x = 8 and x = -2? @wio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks @iGreen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%7Cx-3%7C%3D5

OpenStudy (igreen):

Awesome, thanks.
