I have been trying to simplify this for a while, but I don't know if I am doing it right or not: (9x-4)-(3x+2). I tried simplifying other problems like this, but I keep getting it wrong. (the requirement is that I simplify it by combining terms) Can someone give me the answer to this as well as the steps in finding the answer and an explanation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it multiple choice

Nnesha (nnesha):

9x-4-3x-2

Nnesha (nnesha):

because of negative sign you should distribute negative -(3x+2) first

Nnesha (nnesha):

what you got now ?????/

OpenStudy (phi):

In (9x-4)-(3x+2) you need to know this: -(3x+2) means the same thing as -1 * (3x+2) -1 * (3x+2) means multiply -1 times each "thing" inside the parens. can you do that ?

I am trying to answer this problem by combining terms. Can someone tell me how to do it that way?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(9x-4)-(3x+2).\] first step is to remove the parentheses, distribute the minus sign \[9x-4-3x-2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

next step is to combine like terms \[9x-3x=6x\] and \[-4-2=-6\]

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

PLEASE This Is Very Urgent!!! I need to know how to do this by COMBINING TERMS!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

final answer is therefore \[6x-6\]

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Thanks, satellite73!
