What is WiMax and LTE? Is there a debate or difference on opinion over these approaches? Why/how does “mobile broadband” involve these?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LTE, or 4g, or Evolved Packet Core.. is the advance older technologies known as 2/3g,UMTS also known as convergence.. Now.. in relation to mobile networks LTE is essentially the core or backbone which and incorporates traditional fixed voice and broadband aka the Internet. Because the lines are blurred between Mobile, Telco & Cable Providers the Network Architecture of any of these service providers may inherit all of these capabilities.. But due to the Monopolies in the United States, it is only the Big TELCO's that are able to offer the capacity, because they own the capacity that allows the Mobile & Cable Internet companies to offer 4G like services.. and many US & incumbent global service providers may incorporate & offer 2/3g & 4g & broadband services to their customers. Your mobile device essentially i small storage device and a conduit for making & receiving calls.. nothing more.. no matter how litle or how much you pay for it... It pings off a cell-tower depending on your location and that signal from your mobile attaches & traverses the PoP or point of presence, then onto the ISP or Telco;s backbone .. Again , broadband network or Internet to deliver your data, SMS, or voice to the party your are communicating with.. Now because cell towers are inundated with all of these voice and data signals, capacity is becoming a problem.. a new services called VoLTE or Voice over LTE is being worked on by most of the worlds incumbents.. .. and in many instances this technology, might or will in time off-load your voice to the internet aka) broadband network - the same as data is off-loaded to WiFi networks when you are at home or out at play.. because lets face it there is way too much Data for Mobile Providers to handle. . Now WiMax is been around for quite a while and is mainly the domain of Enterprise Networks .Esentially it is an extension of WiFi which today has a limit of only 15m.. WiMax, today known as Extended WiFi is being implement through what is known as, Marco-Cells, Pico, Cells & Femto cells.. entire Small cell networks that should extend Wifi up to 1km; In Theory.. But again WiMax or Metropolitan networks has primarily been in the domain of Enterprise networks .. and not in the U.S. so much.. Ok now IMS is born and will eventually be a convergence of Everything. V/V/D ..but it's complicated.. I am sorry this is long but it's a complicated service and there are way just to point you too the many well meaning docs but usually become highly technical in order to explain it in one go.. I hope this helps..
