Yara rolls a standard die and flips a coin. What is the probability that she gets an even number and heads? twenty-five percent fifty percent seventy-five percent one hundred percent
There are six sides on a die. Three of them are even. (3 even/6 total) = 1/2 There are two sides on a coin. One of them is heads. (1 head/ 2 sides) = 1/2 To find combined probability for mutually exclusive events, multiply them together. (1/2)(1/2) = (1/4) Twenty Five Percent
"mutually exclusive" ?? Try "independent"
so then what is it @tkhunny
It's still 25%, I just had my wording wrong
As a general rule, try not to ask for an answer when is is already laid out before you. Read TomShoe's response more carefully. Look for what is happening. Do NOT look for just the answer.
i need the answer im just checking over my answer
i dont really need to be schooled on this
Let's consider both the die and the coin: - A standard die will have 6 sides numbered 1 through to 6. There is an equal probability of getting any of the numbers on a given roll, 1/6. So, as we could get a 2, 4 or 6, the probability of getting an even number is 3/6 = 1/2 - The coin has two sides, so the probability of getting a head or a tail on a toss are both 1/2. The outcome of the die or the coin are not dependent of each other, so the probability of both events occurring is equivalent to the probability of them occurring on their own multiplied together. i.e. P(even number and heads) = P(even number) x P(heads) = 1/2 x 1/2
@Gravity_Dreams Every time I answer one of your questions you always say you're in a hurry or some excuse for just the answer, if you're looking for just the answer, this isn't the place for you.
so 50 % @Ciarán95
That's not really the way we work, here. Please read the Code of Conduct and heed its wisdom: http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct. This question is designed to test your knowledge of Independent Events. The "answer" will not give much of a clue about that knowledge.
and btw batman its because i just like to check my answer before i turn in a test -_-
and they do not give you all day to turn it in
@Gravity_Dreams The best way to "check your answer" is to SHOW YOUR WORK. Making someone else work the problem is suspicious and possibly actual cheating. All you have to do is show your work. Simple as that.
We don't help on tests/ exams either.
they dont let you show your work if its a multiple choice
If you understand the concept of the question, as you say you do, then the maths shouldn't really be an issue here. If you realise that you have to multiply the two probabilities together then that's the root of the question, the rest is just a simple calculation.
why u assume im on an exam batman ? u cant prove nothing i just need to have an answer checked your making it difficult
We allow you to show your work. Please do it. Please stop making excuses for your behavior that is inconsistent with the Code of Conduct. Please take the time to read it. If you are not willing to abide by its principles, please consider this pursuit in some other forum.
ok well thank you thats all i needed to know see how simple it is to help someone ? :)
There's no need to make a big deal out of this. If you think he's just doing this for answers, then don't answer his questions.
exactly your making it difficult and not helping really since helping is what os is about so im done here
@TomShoe Normally, I would agree, but we have SO MANY wonderful volunteers who are just jumping to help out (Like you, for example), it is very nearly impossible to take that very useful attitude. Trying to teach each user, who doesn't seem to be self-motivated, to read and heed the Code of Conduct is a useful pursuit. We do tend to MAKE it a big deal when a particular user shows pathological disregard for the time and talents of our volunteers. We want to help, but we have to decide what actually constitutes help. If we had infinite resources, this would be less of a problem.
We are here to lead you to the right direction, not to help you cheat. If we give you just the answers, it would give OS a bad rep, and not help you in anyway. You also "signed" the CoC when you registered, which states you are not allowed to cheat. If you have no interest in learning here, as I've said before, this isn't the place for you, the least you can do is show your work, even if you have a multiple choice question, it requires work, otherwise it's just guessing, which is what you've been doing every time you post a question. I'm more than happy to help you, if you're willing to put the effort, otherwise, you're just wasting other peoples time who take time out of the day to volunteer to help others.
once again assuming im cheating ??? really -_- u cant prove nothing first of all 2nd of all if somone does not have any work to show because they do not understand the question they cant ask it ? your not really helpful by telliing people if there cheating or not btw its a moderators job so stop trying to be a mod and actually help people thank you :)
"i need the answer im just checking over my answer" If you already had an answer then you should have work to go with it" Caught ya
"and btw batman its because i just like to check my answer before i turn in a test -_- "
@ Gravity_Dreams In the case of this post, you were GIVEN the answer THREE times. You still didn't seem to know the answer. Your requirement seems to be for someone to say, "The answer is _____." That's no good. Here's the facts: You are asking for help. You are not paying for help. We are happy to provide it for free. You do NOT get to pick the nature of the help. Some volunteers are professional mathematicians and educators. Let them help you in the way THEY deem appropriate. Some volunteers are eager students who really want to help. Without showing any work of your own, you antagonize these willing volunteers. Don't do that. No one is accusing you of cheating or assuming that you are cheating. It is only said that the behavior you are exhibiting is EXACTLY the same behavior as cheaters. You may wish to separate yourself by exhibiting some other behavior. If you wish to control the engagement, feel free to find a local tutor and pay the going rate.
We've all seen many other people requesting specific answers to questions before, the thing is it is the person who gives out this specific answer which can get into trouble from moderators. So, if you ask a question try not to push for a specific answer if possible, especially if there is a good explanation or description given of the steps involved in answering it yourself. We don't want to get into trouble for trying to help you.
