Please I need math help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The table below shows the distance y, in miles, traveled by a toy car in x minutes: Time (x) (minutes) 20 30 40 50 Distance (y) (miles) 5 10 15 20 Part A: What is the most likely value of the correlation coefficient of the data in the table? Based on the correlation coefficient, describe the relationship between time and distance traveled by the toy car. (4 points) [Choose the value of correlation coefficient from 1, 0.8, 0.5, 0.02] Part B: What is the value of the slope of the graph of distance versus time, and what does the slope represent? (3 points) Part C: Does the data in the table represent correlation or causation? Explain your answer. (3 points)

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

I can help you with B and C parts - i have no clue about part A, sorry :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anything would help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

for partB : pick any two points and calculate the slope using slope formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is slope formula again?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

slope = (change in y) / (change in x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I would pick 2 points from x and 2 points from y, or 1 point from x and 1 point from y?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

here (x, y) pair is a point

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Time (x) (minutes) 20 30 40 50 Distance (y) (miles) 5 10 15 20

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

(20, 5) is a point on distance-time graph (30, 10) is another point on the same graph

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you may use those points to find the slope ^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would that be it?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

how did u get 1.3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I subtracted 30-10 and 20-5, (20 and 15) and divided 15 by 20 and got 1.3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

I see, but we need to subtract `y values` right ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

``` (20, 5) is a point on distance-time graph (30, 10) is another point on the same graph ``` change in y = 10-5 = 5 change in x = 30-20 = 10 slope = (change in y) / (change in x) = 5/10 = 0.5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So it would be 0.5?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
And what does it represent?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
since y, distance, is measured in miles, and x, time, is measured in minutes slope = 0.5 miles/minite it represents the `speed `of the toy car !
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok. Thank you! Can you please help me with part c?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
And for the rest of the questions (which are only like 2.3 because of 1 full question and 1/3 of one question) can i leave it in this thread @ganeshie8 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
First, plot the points. (20, 5), (30, 10), (40, 15), (50, 20) A. You'll see that it's a perfectly straight line, so it's a perfect positive correlation --- Positive because it increases from left to right. The value to represent this is 1. A correlation of 1 means time and distance have a perfect positive linear relationship, meaning if x increases by a certain value, y also increases by a certain value at the same time. In our case, every time x increases by 10, y increases by 5.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
hope that helps for part A
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
wow that looks great xD
OpenStudy (anonymous):
nice job @ganeshie8
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thank you so much! What is the most likely value of the correlation coefficent of the data in the table @$w3G_Godd
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@$w3G_Godd
OpenStudy (anonymous):
1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@ninjasandtigers is this causation or correlation???
OpenStudy (anonymous):
a correlation...i think thats what @$w3G_Godd said
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@liorafanny
OpenStudy (anonymous):
but why correlation..... it says to explain
OpenStudy (anonymous):
honestly I can't remember...this was so long ago but i do remember at a correlation doesn't always imply a causation.
